April 2023

By the time you get this, April will be wrapped—but since I'm writing on Sunday evening I'll exercise my prerogative to call this an April update. I'll try to make May a fast follow. I wouldn't say this month has been cruel, so much as just really busy.

My main goal tonight is to celebrate the Independent Shakespeare Co. of Los Angeles—heading into its 20th year of delivering classic theatre to the people of LA for exactly what it costs you to receive this infrequent newsletter—to wit, nothing. I am honored to have supported this organization in various capacities for several years now.

The pandemic years have forced performing arts organizations to show their resilience, and ISCLA has done this with aplomb. When COVID shut down live performances—depriving an annual 45k Angelenos of their summer Shakespeare in Griffith Park fix, ISCLA pivoted to creating its own feature film. Live at the Porpentine, an adaptation of A Comedy of Errors inspired by 1920s silent comedies, was a joy.

And they're back in Griffith Park on July 5, with Julius Caesar, followed by A Midsummer Night's Dream in August. it's one of the best things you can do in LA during the summer.

If you want to get more deeply involved you have some additional opportunities:
  • On Saturday 13 May ISC is holding its annual gala, A Midsummer Saturday Night's Fever Dream and you are invited! Handcrafted cocktails! Filipino barbecue! Hanging out with the stars of the summer festival and a silent auction - including many HLH favorites and a Brew Day Experience at our world headquarters in lovely Hancock Park! Seriously: if you plan to come, let me know and we'll have fun there.
  • And you are always encouraged to Donate to our Summer Shakespeare Drive. Free theatre ain't free to produce and when you give you build community and supply access to the arts for everyone in LA.

In brewing news, one of our main contributions to the ISCLA gala is the newly released Midsummer's Fever Dream Hazy IPA, a game-changer in our approach to the NEIPA category. Label art was inspired by the Shakespeare/disco mashup theme of the gala and there's also a low-key contest: the first fan who identifies the disco classic that we adapted into Shakespearean sonnet form for the left-panel text will get a HLH variety sixpack. (I can guarantee that nowhere in there will you find information pertaining to the November 2020 presidential election.)

There's actually a number of other beers in the backlog that haven't been written up yet—an Abbey Ale, the Brettanomyces project, an Irish Red inspired by dog toys, and something with a whole lot of blood oranges in it. But these will have to wait until next month—that is, the month in which you currently find yourself when you read this, presumably.

New Sparks album on the way—don't sit on your hands. I may have something nice to say about Lana Del Rey in a future post. Until then,

- Your friend in brewing, Eric.
