September 2022

IMG_4088
Is it really September already? The heat wave hanging over Los Angeles argues that summer will not release its sweltering grip without a fight, and the beach is on the over side of the 405 so I'll stay put where there's air conditioning. The nights are more hospitable: over the past month I've been to the Hollywood Bowl for several great concerts and to Griffith Park for the annual Free Shakespeare Festival, which you're encouraged to get to right know and every year henceforth.

What's been going on here? Well, we've got two tasty releases since our last missive: Dep't of Administration Maibock, a malty, low-ABV crusher paying homage to the folks that make me want to make like a millenial and cancel my landline, and Interrobang Mango Wheat Ale, a celebration of obscure punctuation. For those that are wondering, the habañeros didn't express as much as I wanted them to - there's a hint but not a burn. There will always be a next time. Read about both brews below.

The new batch of La Mancha Sour Ale is slowly grinding to a halt in the fermenter and ready to be bottled this weekend; I forgot to add the spices during the boil so they're all sitting with the cherries in secondary. It will be interesting to see how this changes the brew from last time out. And I'm warming up the important muscles of the body for this weekend's new mystery brew. No spoilers, but I had to buy a special knife for one of the adjuncts.

In our future: a new batch of Golem of Prague, but this time more Pilsnery and more Jewishy. We've also just about fully envisioned that gruited Kölsch, but more on that later!

I've been asked to give a talk about my brewing at my business school reunion, which is right around the corner; it will be fascinating to see what my peers think about this strange hobby. But before then: Labor Day is just about upon us—take the opportunity to, paradoxically, rest.
